Last updated: October 8, 2026 · Exchange rates as of October 8, 2026
Software developer salaries across Africa range from about $3,000 a year for a junior developer in Nigeria or Egypt to over $90,000 for a lead engineer in South Africa. For a mid-level developer employed locally, expect roughly $6,000 a year in Nigeria, $11,000 in Egypt and Ghana, $21,000 in Kenya and $38,000 in South Africa. Developers working remotely for foreign companies earn far more, usually $30,000 to $60,000 a year at mid-level.
This guide compares software developer salaries in Africa’s five biggest developer markets by seniority, in local currency and in US dollars at current exchange rates. It also covers pay by role, what it costs to employ a developer once employer contributions are added, and how that compares with hiring in the US or UK.

Monthly salaries in local currency
Developers in Africa almost always negotiate and get paid monthly, so this is the table to use when you write an offer.
| Country | Junior | Mid-level | Senior | Lead |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nigeria (₦) | 200,000–450,000 | 450,000–900,000 | 900,000–2,000,000 | 2,000,000–4,000,000 |
| Kenya (KES) | 60,000–150,000 | 150,000–300,000 | 280,000–500,000 | 450,000–700,000 |
| South Africa (R) | 25,000–40,000 | 40,000–65,000 | 65,000–95,000 | 95,000–135,000 |
| Egypt (EGP) | 15,000–35,000 | 35,000–60,000 | 60,000–100,000 | 100,000–150,000 |
| Ghana (GH₵) | 3,000–9,000 | 7,000–15,000 | 14,000–27,000 | 25,000–40,000 |
Why other salary tables give you different numbers
If you have compared a few salary guides, you will have seen figures that disagree by a factor of three or more. There are three main reasons.
- Out-of-date exchange rates. Several widely shared guides still convert naira at ₦375 to ₦480 to the dollar and Egyptian pounds at under 20. The naira has traded above ₦1,300 since 2024 and the pound above 45. Using old rates makes Nigerian and Egyptian developers look three times more expensive in dollars than they are. Every dollar figure on this page uses an October 2026 rate.
- Mixing local and remote pay. A senior developer in Lagos might earn ₦1.5 million a month from a local fintech, or $6,000 a month from a US startup. Both are real. Guides that blend the two produce averages that match neither.
- Small samples. Self-reported salary sites can have under 20 profiles for a country. Treat any single source with caution, especially for Ghana.

How we calculated software developer salaries in Africa
- We compared local-currency salary ranges from at least two sources per country: developer surveys, salary aggregators and job-market reports published in 2026. The full list is in “Sources and methodology” at the end of this page.
- Where sources disagreed, we used the range most of them overlap on, and we excluded figures that came from outdated exchange-rate conversions.
- We converted everything to US dollars ourselves at market rates on October 8, 2026, rather than copying dollar figures from other guides.
- Figures are gross base salary for full-time employees of local companies, before tax, excluding bonuses and equity. Remote pay is shown separately.
- We review this page every quarter and whenever a currency moves sharply.
Software developer salaries by country
Nigeria
Nigeria has Africa’s largest developer population and the lowest local pay in dollar terms, mainly because the naira lost more than half its value between 2023 and 2024. Juniors at local companies typically earn ₦200,000 to ₦450,000 a month and seniors ₦900,000 to ₦2 million. Lagos pays more than Abuja and other cities, and fintechs pay the most. Lead engineers at the strongest fintechs can reach ₦4 million a month, but that band is rare.
Because local pay is low in dollars, many experienced Nigerian developers already work remotely for foreign companies. If you are hiring senior talent, expect to compete with those offers rather than with local salaries. Our average salary in Nigeria guide covers pay across other professions.
Kenya
Kenyan developers earn more than Nigerian developers in dollar terms at every level, largely because the shilling has been stable at around KES 129 to the dollar. Mid-level developers typically earn KES 150,000 to 300,000 a month. Nairobi is the main hub, and international companies with local offices there often pay well above local startups for the same role.
South Africa
South Africa pays the highest local developer salaries in Africa, with mid-level developers earning R40,000 to R65,000 a month. Cape Town and Johannesburg are the main markets, and Johannesburg tends to pay more at senior levels. Banks, fintechs and cloud specialists sit at the top of the range. At these rates, South Africa is closer in cost to Eastern Europe than to the rest of Africa.
Egypt
Egypt combines a large engineering talent pool with low dollar costs, after the pound weakened sharply in 2024. Mid-level developers earn EGP 35,000 to 60,000 a month locally. Multinationals with offices in Cairo pay well above local companies, and senior engineers there can earn double the local market rate.
Ghana
Ghana is a smaller market, and its salary data is the thinnest of the five. Entry-level developers earn around GH₵3,000 to GH₵9,000 a month, and senior developers at fintechs and international firms GH₵14,000 to GH₵27,000. Some Ghanaian tech employers quote pay in US dollars, which protects staff from cedi movements.
Software developer salaries across Africa by role
Specialists earn more than generalists in every market. DevOps, cloud, data and AI/ML engineers command the highest pay, while front-end and QA roles sit below the average. The table shows estimated monthly gross pay at mid level (2 to 5 years’ experience), in local currency, with the annual US dollar equivalent underneath.

How this is estimated: country-level, role-by-role salary data is too thin to publish directly, so we applied the pay ratios between roles from the Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey (full-stack = 1.00; front-end 0.86, mobile 0.96, back-end 1.10, data engineer 1.12, DevOps 1.20, AI/ML 1.23, QA 0.79) to each country’s mid-level range. Cloud infrastructure engineers earn even more, at about 1.42 times full-stack pay. Treat these as planning figures, not quotes.
Local salaries vs remote salaries
The biggest pay gap in African tech is not between countries but between local and international employers. A mid-level developer who earns about $6,000 a year from a Nigerian company can earn $30,000 to $60,000 working remotely for a US or UK company.
| Source | What it measures | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| Plane salary data | Remote software engineers in Nigeria, base salary | Median $56,926 a year (10th to 90th percentile: $13,996 to $116,938) |
| McTaba (May 2026) | International remote roles across Africa, 2+ years’ experience | Median $60,000 a year (range $36,000 to $120,000) |
| Condia (March 2026) | Nigerian developers working remotely | $2,500 to $5,000 a month; seniors and leads $5,000 to $10,000 a month |
- Mid-level remote developers: usually $2,500 to $5,000 a month.
- Senior remote developers: usually $5,000 to $10,000 a month.
- Juniors: are rarely hired remotely by foreign companies, so there is little reliable remote data below 2 years’ experience.
- Through talent marketplaces: the client’s cost is often well above what the developer receives, because the platform adds its margin on top.
For a foreign employer, the right offer usually sits between the two. It needs to be clearly above the local market to attract strong candidates and keep them, but it does not have to match US or UK salaries. For seniors, assume your best candidates already have remote offers in that $5,000 to $10,000 a month range.
What it really costs to employ a developer in Africa
Salary is only part of the cost. Employers also pay statutory contributions and, if they do not have a local entity, the cost of a compliant way to employ.
Worked example: a senior developer in Nigeria through an Employer of Record
| Cost item | Per year (₦) | Per year (US$) |
|---|---|---|
| Gross salary (₦1.5 million a month) | 18,000,000 | 13,333 |
| Employer pension contribution (10%) | 1,800,000 | 1,333 |
| NSITF (1%) | 180,000 | 133 |
| ITF (1%) | 180,000 | 133 |
| Betternship EOR fee (15% of gross) | 2,700,000 | 2,000 |
| Total cost to employ | 22,860,000 | 16,933 |
This is an upper estimate. Pension is calculated on basic salary, housing and transport allowances, which is usually less than total gross. Health insurance and a 13th-month bonus are common extras. PAYE income tax is deducted from the employee’s pay, not added to your cost.
An Employer of Record in Nigeria employs the developer on your behalf, runs payroll, deducts PAYE under the Nigeria Tax Act and pays pension and other contributions, so you can hire without setting up a Nigerian company. For a full breakdown across roles, see how much it costs to hire someone in Nigeria.
Employer contributions in all five countries
Every country adds its own mandatory employer contributions on top of salary. The table applies them to a mid-level developer at the mid-point of the local range.
| Country | Main employer contributions (2026) | Mid-level salary | Employer contributions | Total cost per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nigeria | Pension 10% (on basic, housing and transport), NSITF 1%, ITF 1% | ₦675,000/month | Up to ₦81,000/month (12%) | About $6,700 |
| Kenya | NSSF 6% up to KES 108,000 (max KES 6,480/month), Affordable Housing Levy 1.5%, NITA KES 50/month | KES 225,000/month | KES 9,905/month (4.4%) | About $21,900 |
| South Africa | UIF 1% up to R17,712/month, Skills Development Levy 1%, COIDA (varies by risk class) | R52,500/month | About R700/month (1.3%) plus COIDA | About $38,500 |
| Egypt | Social insurance 18.75% of insurable wage, capped at EGP 16,700/month (max EGP 3,131.25) | EGP 47,500/month | EGP 3,131/month (6.6%) | About $11,600 |
| Ghana | SSNIT 13% (10.5% Tier 1, 2.5% Tier 2) | GH₵11,000/month | GH₵1,430/month (13%) | About $12,900 |
Totals are salary plus employer contributions, converted at October 8, 2026 rates. They exclude health insurance, bonuses and the cost of your employment route. Employee deductions such as PAYE, Kenya’s SHIF (2.75%) and employee pension shares come out of the developer’s pay, not your budget. Rates change often, so confirm them before you make an offer.
The pattern is clear: caps on contributions make South Africa, Kenya and Egypt cheaper in percentage terms for well-paid developers, while Ghana and Nigeria charge a flat percentage on every naira or cedi.
How to employ a developer outside Nigeria
Betternship recruits developers across Africa. Outside Nigeria, clients usually hire the developer as an independent contractor or employ them through their own local entity. Our direct hire fee is 10% of the developer’s annual salary, paid once. If you use contractors, check the local rules on misclassification before you sign, as treating a full-time contractor like an employee can create liabilities for you.
African developer salaries vs US and UK salaries
| Salary | Employer costs on top | Total cost per year | |
|---|---|---|---|
| US software developer (median) | $135,980 | Benefits are about 30% of total pay | About $194,000 |
| UK software developer (median) | £65,000 ($85,900) | Employer NI 15% above £5,000 (£9,000) plus 3% minimum pension (£1,321) | About £75,300 ($99,500) |
| Senior developer in Nigeria via Betternship EOR | ₦18,000,000 ($13,333) | Pension, NSITF, ITF and 15% EOR fee | About $16,900 |
| Mid-level developer in Kenya (local rate) | KES 2,700,000 ($20,930) | NSSF, housing levy, NITA | About $21,900 |
| Senior remote developer paid in USD | $60,000 to $120,000 | Depends on employment route | $60,000 to $120,000+ |
US: BLS median for software developers, May 2025. UK: IT Jobs Watch median for permanent software developer jobs advertised in the six months to October 8, 2026; employer NI and auto-enrolment pension at 2026/27 rates on qualifying earnings of £6,240 to £50,270. £1 = $1.32.
A senior Nigerian developer employed through an Employer of Record costs about a sixth of a median UK developer and under a tenth of a median US developer. Even at a remote-market salary of $60,000, you spend well under half the cost of a typical US hire. The gap is narrower in South Africa, where a senior developer costs $47,000 to $69,000 in salary alone.
Africa also overlaps well with both markets. Lagos is one hour ahead of London in winter and the same time in summer, so UK teams get a near-identical working day. Accra, Lagos and Johannesburg are 5 to 7 hours ahead of New York in winter, so a developer working 10am to 7pm in Lagos covers the whole US East Coast morning.
How to set a salary for an African developer

- Decide whether you are competing locally or remotely. For juniors, the local range is the benchmark. For seniors, assume your candidates also have remote offers.
- Price in local currency or in dollars, and say which. Paying in naira or cedis exposes your developer to currency falls. Many foreign employers set salaries in dollars or review local-currency pay every six months.
- Budget for the full cost, not just salary. Add statutory contributions, benefits, and your employment route (EOR, contractor, or entity) before you approve the role.
- Check the stack. Cloud, DevOps, data, and machine learning engineers command more than general web developers at every level.
- Plan for public holidays and leave. See our African public holidays 2027 calendar to plan cover.
